The Royal Seal of Approval

Today was Press Day at the Chelsea Flower Show and all those present at the Places of Change Garden were delighted that so many of Britain's best loved stars spent some time in our garden. Visitors included David Bellamy, Rolf Harris, Dame Helen Mirren, Moira Stewart, Raymond Blanc, Lesley Garrett and many more!
The day became really special when we started to receive royal visitors, including Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. The crowning glory came when the Queen decided to spend some time learning about our wonderful garden from Paul Stone and Howard Jones from the Eden Project, and then took the time to meet many of the poeple involved in creating the garden, including clients from Look Ahead and House Of Heroes. What an honour!

All Eyes on the Places of Change Garden

Media interest in the Places of Change garden is increasing as the story of this amazing project is spreading. We were delighted to be featured in the Guardian Society supplement this week as well as having an insert in this week's Big Issue.
Most excitingly, the garden is situated directly in front of the BBC's press box, so we hope that when Alan Titchmarsh is interviewing people on the famous balcony, our garden will have pride of place in the background! Who knows, perhaps the famous Titchmarsh will be next in the line of people who want to learn more about this extraordinary garden and the people behind it!

Where there's wood there's a way!

I visited Chelsea yesterday afternoon to get an overview of the Places of Change garden and am amazed at how enthusiastic and busy everyone was. The garden really seems to be coming together and I am both pleased and proud that Accsys is involved in such a worthwhile project. Our Accoya® wood team has been working with St Mungo’s, the homelessness charity, in their WoodWorks workshop in Harrow Road, West London, and their carpenters have been learning how to use our new sustainable, high technology wood to make the planters and compost bins and other items for the Chelsea garden. Hopefully this training will translate into key skills they can offer which will enhance their future employment prospects. In any case, it’s given them a real buzz to know their work is going on display in such a prestigious setting and will even be viewed by The Queen! I can’t wait to come back and see the garden when it’s finished and stand back and watch all the great and the good admire everyone’s hard work. Congratulations to all involved on a truly unique and inspiring garden.

The Places of Change garden is almost three times the size of last year’s garden at 590m². We are venturing into the unknown, but the size does mean we can do something completely different design-wise. It also provides a fabulous opportunity to get more people involved. The big plot means we can grow lots of plants all over the country.
Eden has a worldwide philosophy of wanting to make people aware of the importance of the relationship between people and plants and the whole thing just ties in together. The overall theme is that horticulture is at the centre of life and from it come all the things we need. We can push that message home by involving the most unlikely candidates: homeless people and prisoners - amateurs who may be in the process of training or work experience – giving them an opportunity. We like to think of our teams as buried treasure, the ones that society tends to give up on, but here they are and I’ve got every reason, especially after last year, to expect just as much from this garden.
